Innovation With a Twist
Sony Electronics breaks new ground with its CLIÉ PEG-NR70V handheld. The Palm OS v.4.1-based PDA is the first to feature a rotating color LCD screen, a Dragonball Super VZ 66MHz processor, and a built-in CMOS digital camera on the hinge. The CLIÉ screen opens for access to the integrated keyboard or rotates 180 degrees and folds so the movable camera lens can capture photos. The TFT 16-bit color display shows 320 by 480 pixels, weighs 7 ounces and measures 5.5 by 2.9 by 0.7 inch. The unit has a lithium-ion polymer rechargeable internal battery.

Siemens Does The GSM/TDMA Tango
Siemens' S46 Global Phone marries dual-band GSM and dual-band TDMA coverage to keep mobile roamers in touch in more places worldwide. The S46 is the first phone to offer expanded coverage, with TDMA technology picking up where GSM drops off - for instance, in parts of the United States and in Latin America. The phone weighs 4.3 ounces and is GPRS-enabled on AT&T's GSM cellular network. The multiband phone claims talk times of 2.5 hours (TDMA) and 5 hours (GSM).

Logitech debuts its all-in-one protective case and wraparound fabric keyboard, the KeyCase, for Palm OS-based handhelds. The handheld sits in the cradle, ready for stylus-free input, with an on-screen button, dedicated function keys and a pressure-sensitive scroller for navigation. Kyocera Wireless Corp. introduces its line of Assisted Global Positioning System-enabled (AGPS) handsets, the Kyocera 2300 Series. The Kyocera 2325 and 2345 (shown) handsets can locate users in emergency situations via the wireless network, in compliance with FCC directives. The 4.7 by 1.9 by 1.0 inch, 4.3-ounce CDMA phones will feature 1xRTT technology, reaching data-transfer rates as high as 153Kbps, and should provide up to 3.8 hours of talk time.

The Workstation Goes Mobile
IBM introduces its version of a mobile workstation, the ThinkPad A31p, combining high-speed graphical performance with wireless 802.11b and Bluetooth technology. The A31p features a Mobile Pentium 4 Processor-M, a 15-inch UXGA display and viewing angles of up to 170 degrees. The notebook also comes with a standard 256MB of memory, to a maximum of 1GB.

It's Got Personality
The newest version of Sony Ericsson's T68 color phone is the first to offer Multimedia messaging (MMS) so users can send photos, animations and sound clips in their messages, and personalize the phone book. The triple-band GSM T68i, which weighs 3 ounces and has a claimed talk time of 3 to 12 hours, supports GPRS for fast downloads. The phone also accepts the snap-on 0.8-ounce CommuniCam MCA-20 mobile camera, which can store 14 to 208 pictures.
